Meaning, literally, the School of the Enlightened Ones at Avignon. The words *Illumines* and *Illuminati* have been used by various religious sects and secret societies in their names. 

The Académie des Illumines d'Avignon was a Hermetic system of philosophy created in 1785, incorporating some of the doctrines of Emanuel Swedenborg.
